Ep. 1 | Exodus: The Big Picture

Text: Exodus 1:1-7

1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household: 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, 4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5 All the descendants of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. 6 Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. 7 But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.

1.The CENTRALITY of this PORTION

Pattern: EVIL-EXILE-EXODUS (micro-pattern in the main portrait)

Jesus Exile: Luke 9:30-31. “And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure,2 which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.”

Our Exile: 2 Peter 1:15, “And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.”

2. CONTINUITY of God’s PLAN
GA Chadwick: “MANY books of the Old Testament begin with the conjunction And. This fact, it has been often pointed out, is a silent indication of truth, that each author was not recording certain isolated incidents, but parts of one great drama, events which joined hands with the past and future, looking before and after.”

3. The CHARACTERISTIC of God’s PATIENCE

4. CARE for God’s People

QUESTION: Why would God want this book called, “The Book of Names”? How does this bring encouragement to your life and value to others?

5. CERTAINTY of God’s Purpose

APPLICATION:

  1. Your FOCUS (God is working a far bigger picture)

  2. Your FORTITUDE (God uses broken people)

  3. Your FAITHFULNESS (God is glorified and blesses the mundane)
