Daddy Theological Training
On April 18th, 2019, my world changed forever.
In the delivery room of Saint Francis Women’s Medical Center, my wife and I welcomed our daughter Haven Rahab into the world and my name changed to “Dad.” Every parent knows their life will change dramatically when God entrusts a precious life into their care. It is expected that the sleep patterns of a new parent will change, diaper changes become an art, grocery expenses exponentially increase, and joy permeates the home as a new human checks off their “firsts.”
But there is another aspect of becoming a dad that isn’t quite as obvious. God enrolled me in class. This time, Daddy Theological Training.
And this is where we are headed.
We know from a myriad of Biblical passages that God identifies Himself as our Father. In fact, it’s the way we are taught to address Him when speaking to the LORD (Matthew 6:9). But in this beautiful reality (that God is our heavenly Father who perfectly loves us) there is also the reality that on earth, we are called to reflect His character, show forth His beauty, and communicate His truth through the mediums He provides…in this case, the privilege of bearing the title, “Daddy.”
This journey will be about the lessons God is teaching me through my instructors. Instructor #1:The Almighty God, and yes, Instructor #2: my daughter, Haven Rahab (perhaps more instructors in days to come). It won’t be so much about our success in parenting as much as it will be about my heavenly Father’s patience in showing His character in the mundane moments of being a dad.
And if you know much about being the parent of a newborn, it’s not a clean job. There is spit-up, explosive diapers, soiled clothing, lots of spills…and in these moments, there is love. This is going to be about God’s love in teaching one dad about His character so that, I pray, a little girl on earth can easily see just how loved she is by God.
It’s time for class.
